Agency searches Ikoyi flats of ex-gov Obi, Mu'azu, Mo Abudu, others over seized $50m

As investigations into the $50 million cash found at a flat in Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, intensifies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has ransacked the apartment of ex-Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi.

Obi, whose apartment was searched on Tuesday, April 17, is one of the high-profile owners of flats at the Osborne Towers, where the cash haul was found.
The EFCC also searched an apartment belonging to a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu.
Other prominent persons living in the building include a former Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (Retail), Mrs. Esther Nnamdi-Ogbue; and media mogul and founder of Ebony Life Television, Mo Abudu.
The anti-graft agency had found $43.4m, £27,000 and N23m cash in flat 7B of the building last Wednesday following a sting operation aided by a whistle-blower.
It was learnt that operatives of the agency searched all the flats in the building, including the unoccupied ones.
The EFCC detectives believe that there might be more money concealed in other flats including three unoccupied apartments, Punch reports.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Obi's aide, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, confirmed that all the apartments in the building were searched by the EFCC.
He said the ex-governor's wife rented the apartment, adding that Mr Obi stays there whenever he is in Lagos for engagements.
"Even though Mr. and Mrs Obi had travelled to the USA and the UK for speaking engagements, when we relayed the message of the search to him, he quickly sent the keys to the four-bedroom apartment to the EFCC via courier.
"He even left instructions that we should allow them to also search his Onitsha residence should there be a need for that. After the thorough search, nothing was found in the apartment," the statement said.
According to Punch, which cited a source, the National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno, is in charge of the investigations and not the  Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN).
The source said the Presidency may address the issue after the NSA concludes investigations.
